Do you currently sell directly to the research, biotech

into? Typical products in this area are analyzers or kit type tests that
identify and/or monitor (similarly to the clinical laboratory) thyroid
disorders, fertility management, drugs of abuse, psychiatric drug management,
oncology diagnosis and prognosis, bleeding complications and the list goes
on……However, these tests are typically not used for patient care. They are for
learning more so that eventually patient care will be improved. These are the
tests that are usually more molecular (PCR, DNA, RNA, SiRNA). Learn who the top

Do you currently sell into the clinical or research
laboratory? Is your product a large (or small) piece of capital equipment? Like
a chemistry analyzer, an immunoassay system, a freezer, a stainer or some other
type of equipment that represents a capital expenditure in the lab’s budget. Or
is this an area that you are interested in learning more about? Both clinical
(where a patient is involved) and research laboratories have many pieces of
equipment that either have to be replaced because of wear and tear or
obsolescence. Sometimes, they purchase equipment to do assays or experiments
that they have not been performing previously. Top companies in this area are
Beckman, Roche, Siemens (Bayer and DPC), Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, and GE
(Abbott). Learn about the typical lab sales representatives actual job duties

Do you currently sell into the pathology area of the
hospital laboratory? Is this an area of particular interest to you? This area of
the laboratory is usually managed by a pathologist. A pathologist is an MD
(physician) who interprets and diagnosis the changes caused by disease in the
body. An anatomic pathology group is really specialized in examination of cells
and tissues removed from the body. They are the folks who look through a “scope”
(microscope) at those glass slides with tissue samples on them. Oncology (or
cancer) patients are very fortunate to have the incredible expertise and
continued drive to know more of these doctors. In this area products include but
are not limited to : microscopes, imaging systems, strainers, microtome’s, cover
slippers, tissue processors, staining reagents (immunohistochemistry (IHC),
special stains, fish ISH, antibodies, etc)… Top companies in this arena are
Ventana Medical Systems, Dako, Vision BioSystems, Leica, Shandon, and Fisher
Diagnostics. Learn about the typical lab sales representatives actual job duties

Imaging means different things to different people. It
all depends upon their experiences in the past. So some think of imaging in
terms of business - copies, photos, etc. And therefore think of software or
copier sales. Some think of imaging in terms of CAT scans, ultrasound scans, and
PET scans. These are diagnostic and prognostic tools for the clinical
physicians. Remember, means that there is a patient and therefore these are the
tests that are approved by the insurance providers. For us here at PHC
Consulting, imaging applies to the laboratory application. Therefore when we
post image sales positions, our client company has a product that is used by the
research or clinical laboratorian. The "image" is a picture at the molecular or
cellular level. Research laboratories use imaging products to look at cells,
virus, germs, and even reactions. We have all see the picture of the sperm
attacking the egg - that is imaging in a laboratory setting! Oncology (cancer)
based testing - usually a biopsy of the cancerous tissue is sliced and prepared
so that the pathologist (the MD/PhD who is focused on using laboratory methods
to assist the clinical physician in treating the patient) can view the slide (3
inch glass slide that has the biopsy slice fixed on it) through a microscope.
Imaging products (software and microscopes and sorters) that give the
pathologist the ability to view the slide on his computer and save it as a file
(similar to how we save our personal pictures). Pathologists are embracing these
products because of their ability to share the files with others (to get their
opinions on the case at hand), the ability to store the images rather physical
slides (and how you could find the slide if you needed to?), and the ability to
document notes and findings with the images. So now when you see that we have an
imaging position, you will know what we are talking about.....

Ultimately, my advice for almost every
professional sales person, is to get into HealthCare Sales. Why? Because it
is somewhat insulated from economic highs and lows. HealthCare sales is the
sale of any product that is involved in the process of providing for the
physician, laboratorian, radiologist, respiratory therapists, and any other
type of professional that is providing a service to the patient (for their
health). So all of my jobs fall under this umbrella.
Here are a few of the different areas of healthcare sales:
laboratory product sales, pharmaceutical sales, biotech sales (usually
injectables to the patient), medical device sales, patient monitoring device
sales, pharmaceutical dispensing product sales, therapy products
(respiratory, physical, neurological equipment), imaging (CAT, PET, etc),
medical disposable products, capital equipment (beds, chairs, etc) and the
list goes on.
My opinion is that pharma sales is the least desirable of these segments. It
hasn't always been this way, but with the environment today, the
pharmaceutical sales representative is not valued. No there are so many of
them unemployed that the few jobs have massive applications. I would stay
clear of that and if I were in pharma sales, I would be focused on
transitioning into a new area of healthcare sales.
