MedReps has recently published its 2012 Medical Sales Rep Salary Report so you can see what medical sales reps make in various fields–like medical device, biotech, pharma, healthcare IT, laboratory, and more.
(By the way…if I were ever to go back into medical sales as a rep, I would head straight for healthcare IT…that’s where the money and the growth is. Just sayin’.)
Anyway, I think MedReps is fantastic for putting together a survey like this. It takes a lot of work to put one of these together, and I think they did an amazing job. They polled more than 30,000 members and got a solid response from 1400 currently employed medical sales reps.
This survey is chock-full of information for you…not just what products people sell, but also more in-depth details on age, experience, gender, travel, and more.
Some things were pretty predictable…medical device reps earn quite a bit, as do healthcare IT reps. But I had a question about pharma: the salaries in the survey seem high to me because I’ve seen some salary degradation over the last couple of years. But I’d be interested in hearing from you about what your experience is.
However, as a medical sales rep I think you should take some of this with a grain of salt. You cannot go into your medical sales job search process expecting to always see numbers like these. Every company is different, and I think that sometimes sales reps in certain fields sometimes classify themselves as something else, which skews survey results a bit. (A natural consequence of combining people with statistics.) But it is helpful to have something like this survey in your back pocket. Research is always a good thing.
(And before you go into your salary negotiations, check out this recording from Jack Chapman on how to negotiate the best salary and perks.)
Again, I want to say “Thanks, MedReps!” for putting together this report. It’s great to have someone doing something like this, and they did a very good job.

They even have a very cool Interactive Salary Widget where you can input your data (medical sales area, geographic location, experience, etc.) and see compensation ranges and available jobs.
