Win Ipod Classic – I need Top 50 Questions You Have About Medical/Healthcare/Pharma Sales and How to break in….

ipod

I am going to do an audio conference at the end of April. The topic will be “How to break into Medical Sales” – I will give my thoughts and experiences about how to successfully transition into medical/healthcare/laboratory/pharma sales. In the conference discussion, I want to answer the top 50 questions that you may have about medical sales, how to transition or why you should transition. I need your help here. Can you put your questions in the comments of this blog post?

To make it more interesting, I will draw a winner out of the first 100 responses (that are real responses). The winner will get an Ipod Classic (that is right – the mac daddy of Ipods – $247 with the ability to hold 30,000 songs). How about that? If the winner is okay with it, I will publish their information (including what they are looking for in their next position and why you should hire them) in this blog. Who knows? Maybe this will be their big break….

Please – click on comments and add your question. Even if you see there are more than 100 responses enter your comment. Some of the 50 may be spam and I won’t count those!

Share this blog with others who might want to participate.

    Peggy,

I aspire to get into medical sales, and I enjoy your blog and learn at little more with each blog it seems. I have a couple questions.

    1. What is the most sought after position in medical sales that you experience?
    2. What type of position has the least barriers to entry?
    3. 2 years ago I earned my BS in business with minor in Biology, and I have 1 year of sales experience as a loan originator. Does this give me a good foundation as a possible candidate?

    Thanks,

    Jon

    Hello Peggy,

I have been in software sales for 13 years. Most recently, I was the Director of Sales for a small software company in the medical field. Due to lack of funding, they stopped selling their product and I am unemployed. It’s now time to pursue my real passion. I am extremely knowledgeable in the field of Diabetes and while using my innate selling skills, I would like to focus on a product that makes a positive difference for diabetics. I am a very healthy Type 1 diabetic, technically “advanced”, passionate about the freedom I know diabetics CAN have (and the horrible consequences if they ignore their disease…) And, oh yeah, I am an experienced sales rep! What a beautiful integration of my worlds!

Recently I enrolled in school (starting summer ’09) to pursue an RN degree. I do not want to be an RN, but I’m banking on the fact that it will serve as a means to an end. Doors should open for me (working with an endocrinologist) so that I can become a CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator). As a CDE, medical device companies will (?) hire me to sell their product.

    1. Is this a wise use of my time and resources? (3-4 years)
    2. How open should I be about my first hand experience with diabetes? I look at it as a tremendous positive, but would they?
    3. Do any medical device/pharmaceutical companies accept experience in place of their educational requirements?

I know what I want, but I am not certain I am taking the most direct path to get there!

    Thank you,

    Linda

i have been in technology sales TO the medical field – how do I transition
to selling within the field -itself ?

What to say – not to say on the resume ?

Most job posts say 2-4 years of medical device sales, how do i qualify
when I meet that requirement ?

I am a ChE w/ 15 yrs exp on all scales from lab to plant and across industries. If I were to transition to sales,

    1) How would I best market myself, given that I have no sale experience?
    2) What should I have on my resume or leave off?
    3) How can I have the opportunity to shadow a sales person?
    4) Are all sales jobs laden with lots of overnight travel? Or are there some that are just local or work-from-home?
    5) Would I be starting at the very bottom in terms of salary, or would I be ahead of those just graduating from college?

I can contribute immensely to your purpose. However “how to successfully transition into medical/healthcare/laboratory/pharma sales” is only 10 words to elicit 50 questions.

When I contribute, I seek return and don’t gamble on lottery. You can have some of my views to seek refined questions.

1.Sales to all 4 disciplines has altogether different SOP to follow.
    2. Sales in any discipline has different hierarchy level of staff
    3. Success of sales in some of the disciplines is dependent on positive contribution of support of another department
    4. The perspective of question can be from few different aspects : Owner asking questions for Final Interview, HR Manager/Consultant asking qualifying questions, Tele-Interview for shortlisting candidate, or candidate wanting to know all 50 questions possibly asked by their employer
    5. How to / Whether to transition debate summons 3 back ground informations. (a) What you doing currently where you are failing/not satisfied (b) What you know about medical field which is luring you to seek transition (c) Why the enquirer thinks that, he/she would be successful in this field

I would end my reply here, congratulating Peggy McKee to initiate such debate here. All the best :)

    Hi Peggy,

I have real estate and outside sales (advertising) experience. I bought a info product on how to break into this industry which basically said that to find a rep or manager who can pass your resume along or hire you, you should dress professionally, bring your resume and hang out in local hospitals.

When you see someone dressed professionally, approach them and ask if they are in medical sales, start a conversation etc. Do you think this is an effective way to get in front of the correct people?
