“In the grocery store of life, you have to figure out why someone would pick you up off the shelf,” says Andrea Nierenberg, president of the Nierenberg Group, a business communication-consulting firm in New York. “Are you new and improved? I LOVE this.  If each of us spent as much time thinking about our career as much as the major food manufacturers think about product placement on a shelf, what could be the consequences?  (Do you even realize how much thought and energy goes into exactly where that box of cereal should be in your line of vision?  It’s mind-boggling.)

    I have been in recruiting for 16 years and I have worked for some of the best companies in the world to include both Google and Microsoft. I have personally experienced the “personal branding” strategy work for me. In these tough economic times, companies are still hiring but they are looking for the best “brand” on the market.

    Your cereal analogy made me smile because I just used something similar in a presentation that I recently did. I told the audience they could either be a box of Froot Loops or a box of Fruit Rings. It all depends on how they brand and market themselves which determines how they are perceived.

    I just wanted to congratulate you on such an excellent article.
