Candidates that are uncertain of their abilities and ask the recruiter if they (the recruiter) thinks they are capable of succeeding in a position are unlikely to get a shot at the position. Recruiters are taking a chance when they put the candidate in front of the client company. You have to convince them that this is a low risk, high payoff with you as the candidate. Showing uncertainty in your ability will take you out of the running.
